Tomato seeds found to inhibit growth of neighboring vegetables.
The study looked at how tomato seeds and seedlings affect the growth of Chinese cabbage, radish, cucumber, and tomato plants. They found that tomato seeds can inhibit the germination of other plants, and even their own seedlings. The more tomato seed extract or decomposing products were used, the more the germination of other plants was affected. This shows that tomato seeds release chemicals that can hinder the growth of neighboring plants.
