Alfalfa Cultivar Identification Breakthrough Promises Improved Crop Yields for Farmers Worldwide
Alfalfa cultivar identification is tricky due to mixed genotypes within cultivars. A study used SSR markers to distinguish native, bred, and cross cultivars. Denatured gels helped avoid nonspecific bands. Longmu series cultivars had a higher gene frequency of a 148bp band at AFcal loci, making them stand out. However, this method couldn't differentiate other cultivars well due to small gene frequency differences. Limited SSR markers made it hard to identify all cultivars, but some could be distinguished using specific trait-associated molecular markers.
