Devastating 92.8 Flood Event Reveals Urgent Need for Improved Flood Control
A heavy rainstorm in 1992 caused a major flood in the Lower Yellow River, with a peak discharge of 6260m3/s. This flood led to significant damage, including flooding of 40000 hectares of farmland. The high water level was due to sediment buildup in the river and changes in runoff and sediment load. Since the 1980s, there has been a noticeable decrease in both runoff and sediment load in the Lower Yellow River, which could lead to future flood control challenges.
