Re-vegetation slashes water runoff by 37% in Loess Plateau watershed.
Re-vegetation with trees like locust, apricot, and elm in the Loess Plateau reduces soil erosion and water loss. A study over 44 years showed a 37% decrease in runoff with afforestation. Runoff reduction was highest in the first 15-20 years after planting trees. Evapotranspiration increased by 620mm, leading to soil desiccation. Overall, re-vegetation helps improve the water cycle and eco-environment in the region.
