Government policies in ancient China shifted towards minorities, impacting border relations.
The policy towards nationalities in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Southern Dynasties evolved through three stages. Initially, there was consolation, then armed suppression, and finally a mix of consolation and punitive expeditions. The focus of punitive expeditions shifted from the lower reach of the Changjiang River to the middle reach and south of the five ridges. This shift reflected a deepening of the governments' control over different minority groups during this period.
