Polluted Beiyun Rivers Threaten Downstream Communities, Defy Cleanup Efforts
The water quality in the Beiyun rivers basin was studied from 2001 to 2010. They found that the quality of the water was very poor, with oxygen consumption and ammonia nitrogen being major pollutants. Water quality is better during high flow periods and depends on the Liangshui, Wenyu, and Tonghui rivers. The water quality slightly improved after 2006 but still did not meet the standard levels. Economic growth and population increase are causing stress on the water quality. Precipitation helps reduce pollution, but non-point sources of pollution are still a problem. Reducing sewage disposal ratios can improve water quality, especially in suburban areas. Overall, the water quality in the Beiyun rivers basin is still a concern and improvements are needed to ensure cleaner water for the future.
