Xiaolangdi Reservoir operation prevents sediment buildup in Lower Yellow River.
The researchers used a mathematical model to simulate sedimentation in the Lower Yellow River after the Xiaolangdi Reservoir was built. They found that with proper reservoir operation, it is possible to prevent the riverbed from rising and even reduce erosion in some areas. The simulation showed that the accumulative sedimentation in the Lower Yellow River was -601.2 million tons and -76.6 million tons for two different time periods.
