New Method Boosts Accuracy of Shallow Soil Moisture Measurements!
Scientists studied different methods of calibrating soil moisture content measured with a neutron instrument. They found that the hierarchical-section method is best for shallow soil moisture, with errors below 10%. Indirectly deriving moisture content from deep soil doesn't improve accuracy. Using a regressed equation with nonlinear least squares isn't stable. The neutron instrument's detection radius depends on soil properties and moisture content.
