Land use and landscape changes in Suzhou oases were studied using satellite images from 1988 and 2000. Cropland and urban areas increased, while grassland and woodland decreased. This led to less diversity and stability in the landscape, impacting the ecological balance of the oases. The changes in land use patterns have made the oases more dependent on water resources, which could further degrade the environment.
