Soil degradation in Northwest China threatens crop growth and farmlands.
The study looked at how soil quality is changing in a dry region of China. They measured soil nutrients, moisture, and salt levels in different areas. The results showed that the soil is becoming less fertile and more salty, making it harder for crops to grow. This is mainly due to a lack of water for irrigation and a drop in the groundwater level. The soil closest to water sources had the highest salt levels. Overall, the soil in the region is getting drier, less fertile, and saltier, making it challenging for farmers to grow crops.
