Rice plants thrive under high CO2 levels, boosting nitrogen efficiency.
Global atmospheric CO2 levels are rising, which can benefit rice growth. A study looked at how adding extra CO2 affected nitrogen levels in rice plants. They found that nitrogen content decreased under high CO2, but nitrogen accumulation increased. More nitrogen went to stems and spikes, less to leaves. Overall, nitrogen use efficiency improved with high CO2, except with high nitrogen levels. The interaction between nitrogen and CO2 was minimal.
