Shanxi's ecological deficit exceeds 1.6 hectares per person, highlighting unsustainable resource use.
In 2001, Shanxi Province's ecological footprint was calculated as 2.491941 hectares per person, exceeding its ecological carrying capacity of 0.810258 hectares. This led to an ecological deficit of 1.681683 hectares per person. The study found that despite this, the efficiency of using biological resources in Shanxi was very low. The analysis of ecological footprints relative to economic output revealed a need for better ecological resource management. Additionally, Shanxi's level of development capacity was observed to be lower than the national average.
