Banana seedlings thrive with higher ammonium ratios, impacting nitrate uptake.
The study looked at how banana seedlings absorb nitrate and ammonium from different nutrient solutions. They found that the way the seedlings take up nitrate follows a specific pattern called the Michaelis-Menten model. Increasing the amount of ammonium in the solution affected how fast the seedlings absorbed nitrate. When more ammonium was present, the seedlings absorbed nitrate at a slower rate. The seedlings showed a preference for nitrate over ammonium, especially when there was more ammonium in the solution. Overall, the study showed that banana seedlings have a low affinity for nitrate uptake.
