A new peanut variety called Shanyou 71 was created by researchers in Guangdong province. It has short stalks, is resistant to lodging and rust, and produces high yields with good quality. In tests, it outyielded the previous variety by 8.76% and had the highest yield of 7,746.75kg/hm2. It was officially approved in 1991 and has been widely planted in South China.
