A study tested a system using periphyton to clean up polluted river water. They found that periphyton removed more nitrogen than phosphorus from contaminated water. The best removal rates were seen at certain nitrogen concentrations. The periphyton's biomass and Chl-a concentration increased during the experiments. The types of algae in the periphyton changed over time.
