The Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the west Sichuan foreland basin has been divided into 5 sedimentary facies, including alluvial fan, fluvial, fan-shaped delta, delta, and lacustrine facies. These facies are distributed southeastwards, indicating material source from the Longmen Mountains. The vertical series of facies suggests an evolution of repeated spreading and contraction of the lake.
