Drought-resistant maize varieties in China show significant yield improvements over time.
The study identified and evaluated the drought tolerance of 35 major maize varieties in China. By conducting experiments and analyzing data, researchers found that certain agronomic traits like ear length and grain number per row were positively correlated with drought resistance. Maize varieties from the year 2000 showed significantly better drought tolerance compared to others. Varieties like Xianyu 335 and Shendan 16 exhibited very strong drought resistance, while Huang 417 and others showed rather strong resistance. This research suggests that combining yield drought index with drought tolerance coefficient can effectively evaluate maize varieties for their ability to withstand drought conditions.
