High yield paddy rice varieties show superior drought-tolerance over Brazil upland rice.
A study compared the drought-tolerance of 4 high-yield paddy rice varieties with Brazil upland rice. The researchers found that the paddy rice varieties could withstand drought better than the upland rice. When the leaves wilted, the paddy rice varieties had lower soil water content and could recover after watering, unlike the upland rice. The drought had less impact on the yield of paddy rice varieties compared to upland rice. Among the paddy rice varieties, V989 and Shanyou 198 showed the best drought-tolerance.
