By studying the water pressure and flow in the soil, researchers found that as the soil gets wetter, it becomes weaker and more prone to sliding. This weakening is the main reason why slopes can collapse after heavy rain. The study also showed that the safety of the slopes decreases as the rainfall gets stronger.
