Sandy desertification leads to soil degradation and nutrient loss in grasslands.
The study looked at how soil changes in a sandy desert area in Duolun County, Inner Mongolia over two years. They found that as the land became more sandy, the soil lost clay and moisture, and became denser. The levels of organic matter, carbon, and nitrogen in the soil decreased significantly. The lack of nitrogen led to a higher ratio of carbon to nitrogen, which is not good for plant growth. The finer the soil particles, the more organic matter it had and the less dense it was. This suggests that the soil stability improved in certain layers.
