Cultivated land in Qinghai Province changed from 2000 to 2008 in a pattern of decrease and increase, with different reasons in different regions. The main driving forces were policies to protect cultivated land, projects for ecological restoration, land development, population changes, and urbanization. It is suggested to enforce land protection policies, consolidate land, differentiate cultivated land, and balance major construction projects with land use.
