Using GIS and math models, researchers found that areas like gardens and roads increased, while unused and cultivated lands decreased. The pattern of land use shifted, with more patches but smaller areas per patch. Water and urban areas decreased, while diversity and fragmentation of land use increased. Population growth and economic development were the main reasons for these changes, along with policy shifts.
