Drought-resistant wheat varieties promise higher yields and food security worldwide.
The experiment aimed to find wheat varieties that can withstand drought and produce high grain yields. Three wheat varieties, Yannong 21, Yan 2415, and Yannong 5158, showed the best drought resistance among nine varieties tested. Drought stress actually improved root growth and development, leading to increased root dry matter weight and root to shoot ratio. Additionally, the levels of photosynthetic pigment, soluble sugar, and proline in the flag leaves increased under drought conditions.
