Exotic plant extracts threaten diversity of native aquatic algae communities.
The study compared the effects of leaf extracts from different underwater plants on the growth and community of algae living on native plants. The extracts from exotic plants were more effective at inhibiting algae growth than those from native plants, especially at higher concentrations. Low concentrations of extracts promoted algae diversity, while high concentrations inhibited growth. Fresh plant extracts were more effective at inhibiting algae than dry ones. Overall, extracts from exotic plants had a stronger negative impact on the algae community, making it less diverse and more simple.
