The article compares the poets Wang Wei and Ruan Ji. Wang Wei is often seen as a Buddhist or a hermit, but his poems show a wide range of emotions beyond just pastoral themes. Only one-third of his poems are about nature. By looking at his connection to Ruan Ji, we can better understand Wang Wei's complex feelings about himself and his poetry.
