Heat treatment breakthrough creates stronger, lighter alloys for aerospace industry.
The researchers studied how different heat treatments affect the structure of a high Nb containing TiAl alloy. By using specific heat treatment processes, they found that eliminating the β phase and using a two-step forging method can create a uniform and fine microstructure. Heat treatment at different temperature ranges resulted in different microstructures, with the most homogenous and finest microstructure achieved through a specific heat treatment process called HT6.
