The scientists studied pollution in the Jiuzhoujiang River in Guangdong. They used a water quality model to predict how far pollutants from different sources spread in the river. By comparing different options for controlling pollution, they found a plan to reduce pollutants discharged into each part of the river. This study aimed to protect the water quality in different areas of the river by setting limits on the amount of pollution allowed in each section.
