Water stress reduces wheat yields by inhibiting photosynthesis, study finds.
Water stress affects the chlorophyll levels and photosynthetic activity of spring wheat plants. By using specialized equipment, researchers found that water stress hinders the plant's ability to convert light energy and carry out photosynthesis effectively. Different wheat varieties respond differently to water stress. Surprisingly, the relationship between plant yields and photosynthetic performance under stress was not significant.
