Grassland degradation in Western Jilin Province threatens ecosystem stability.
The study analyzed changes in grassland landscapes in Western Jilin Province from 1980 to 2000 using satellite images and GIS technology. The results show that the area and number of grasslands decreased, leading to severe degradation. The distribution of grasslands became more even, with simpler shapes and elongated patches. Fragmentation of grassland landscapes decreased from 1980 to 1995 but increased from 1995 to 2000. The movement of grassland centroids shifted towards the northeast over time. Natural factors played a role, but human activities were the main driver of these changes.
