Straw mulching and green manure decrease soil water but boost nutrients.
The study looked at how using straw mulching and planting green manure affects soil water, nutrients, and winter wheat yield in a dryland area in China. They found that these methods did not impact the wheat yield, but planting green manure decreased soil water storage. Green manure increased soil nitrate-N and available phosphorus, but had no effect on soil ammonium-N and available potassium. Overall, using straw mulching and green manure did not significantly change winter wheat yield, but did affect soil water and nutrient levels in specific ways.
