Alpine meadow plant diversity declining due to permafrost degradation.
The study looked at plant diversity in alpine Kobresia meadows in the northern Tibetan Plateau. They found that as grassland communities change, the diversity of plants also changes. Native communities have more plant diversity than restorable ones. The diversity of plants above ground increases and then decreases as permafrost degrades. The diversity between different areas stays steady when the sampling area is between 8 to 16 square meters. Overall, the diversity of plants in Kobresia meadows decreases in a specific order: K. pygmaea meadow, K. humilis meadow, and K. tibetian meadow.
