New study reveals best way to predict deep soil water levels.
The researchers studied how soil water in apple orchards changes with depth. They used a system to measure soil water from April to October in 2005. They found that the variance of soil water was strongest in the top 50cm of soil. The accuracy of predicting deep soil water was best when using data from the top 50cm layer. The forecasting precision was highest for this layer compared to others. The results showed that the best depth of soil to predict deep soil water in this region is the top 50cm layer.
