Low soil moisture threatens oasis stability in Tarim River region.
Soil moisture in the top 15 cm of soil plays a big role in soil drifting in the lower Tarim River area. The soil there is very dry, with an average water content of only 0.84%. Areas with more than 2% moisture are mainly near the oasis and river. The study found that vegetation coverage doesn't strongly affect soil moisture, but soil moisture and soil drifting intensity are closely linked. A protective soil crust helps keep soil moisture in place and prevents soil drifting.
