Green manure boosts soil fertility and water retention in wheat fields
The study looked at how different fertilizers and methods of incorporating green manure affect soil properties in a wheat field. They found that using special fertilizer for green manure crops increased biomass and nutrients in the soil. Early incorporation of green manure before sowing wheat improved soil organic matter, nitrogen, and potassium levels. Nitrate content in the soil increased with green manure incorporation, especially at a depth of around 160 cm. However, water content in the soil was lower in the 160-200 cm layer with green manure treatments compared to leaving the soil fallow. Early mulching of green manure had the lowest water storage in the soil compared to other methods in 2011.
