Wetland reclamation in China leads to ecological devastation and farmland expansion.
Wetlands in the Bielahong river basin have been turned into farmland since the 1950s, disrupting the ecosystem. Using satellite images and maps, researchers found that wetlands shrank as farmland expanded rapidly, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. By 2005, farmland covered 63.69% of the area, while wetlands only occupied 19.44%. The shift of farmland centroid was greater than that of wetland centroid, moving 44.7 km eastward compared to 20.5 km northeast. The main reason for wetland shrinkage was increased agricultural activity due to population growth, along with rising temperatures and decreased rainfall in the region over the past 50 years.
