Optimizing goat stocking rates boosts pasture productivity and animal performance.
A study in southern China looked at how different numbers of goats grazing on improved pastures affected the amount of grass available and the goats' growth. They found that having too many goats per hectare led to less grass and lower weight gain for the goats. The best stocking rates for maximum gain per hectare were around 10.7 goats per hectare in winter-spring and 30.3 goats per hectare in summer-autumn. This means that in winter-spring, about 35.7% of the pasture should be used, while in summer-autumn, around 65.7% should be utilized.
