Livestock Manure in Meizhou Area Poses Environmental Risk, Urgent Action Needed.
Livestock manure in Meizhou, Guangdong was studied to see its impact on the environment. The researchers estimated the amount of manure produced by animals and calculated how much the fields could handle without causing harm. In 2008, Meizhou's livestock industry produced a total of 324.60×104 t of excrement and 180.02×104 t of urine, containing substances like BOD5, COD, and NH3-N. The average capacity of fields to handle this manure was 23.07 t·hm-2·a-1, with an early-warning value of 0.51 indicating slight pollution. Different areas had varying levels of pollution risk, with Fengshun County having the highest risk and Pingyuan County having lower risk, allowing for more livestock production.
