No-tillage farming reduces maize yield due to root system changes.
The study compared maize root and yield characteristics between no-tillage and common cultivation methods. No-tillage cultivation resulted in lower root surface area, length, volume, and number of root tips compared to common cultivation. However, root diameter showed no significant difference. Ear leaf area and height were lower in no-tillage cultivation, but plant height and stem diameter were similar. Yield components like bare stem rate, grain number, and kernel weight did not differ significantly. Overall, maize yield per plant was lower in no-tillage due to higher lodging rates and fewer effective plants.
