Land use impacts soil erosion rates in Wolong area watersheds.
Prediction models were used to study soil erosion in two small watersheds in the Wolong area. By combining a soil loss equation model and GIS technology, researchers found that the annual soil erosion rates were 55.2 t/(km2·a) in one watershed and 568.4 t/(km2·a) in another. The study showed that the predicted soil erosion rates matched well with actual sediment transportation rates. The different patterns of soil erosion in the two watersheds highlight the impact of land use on erosion.
