Optimal nitrogen application rates reduce soil pollution and increase crop yields.
The study looked at how different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer affect soil nitrate levels and crop yields in northern China. After 8 years of wheat and maize crops, they found that soil nitrate levels varied with depth and nitrogen application rate. The optimal nitrogen amount for good crop yields was 400 kg/hm2. Applying 225-400 kg/hm2 of nitrogen can help control nitrate leaching and reduce groundwater pollution risk.
