Hefei Dialect Unveils Ancient Meaning of Word 'Huàn' as 'Wrap'
The word "huàn" in the Hefei dialect was originally pronounced as "guǎn" and meant wrap, tie, and button up. This conclusion was reached by analyzing classic works, the Hefei dialect, and the evolution of the word's meaning. The word 擐 was believed to be the original word for 挎 (carry on one's arm) in modern Chinese, not huan as previously thought. Additionally, 擐 in the pronunciation of juǎn means tie and fasten. This study challenges previous interpretations and provides new insights into the origins and meanings of these words.
