Sandy desertification intensifying in Northern China, urgent action needed.
The study looked at how sandy desertification is affecting an area in Northern China called Zhalot Banner. By analyzing satellite images from the late 1980s to 2000, researchers found that desertification is getting worse, especially in the farming-pasturing mixed areas. The main causes are poor land management, rapid population growth, and overuse of land resources. The most severe desertification is in the southern plain of Zhalot Banner, with two belts of sandy desertified lands. Overall, the area of sandy desertification land has increased by almost 10,000 hectares, with the most expansion happening in the middle part of the region. It's crucial to control population growth, adjust land use, improve land management, and enhance eco-environmental efforts to combat this issue.
