The study looked at how building dams and diverting water in the Western Route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project could affect wetland areas downstream. Using satellite images and mapping technology, researchers identified which areas would be impacted. They found that the wetlands in the active zones near the river sections with reduced flow rates would not be significantly affected by the water diversion plan.
