Toxic Runoff Pollutes Drinking Water in China's Three Gorges Region
The study looked at water quality and nutrient runoff from farms in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. They focused on a small area in LianFeng village, FuLing district. The researchers found that nitrogen levels in the water were high, especially in spring and summer. Ammonia nitrogen was the main form of nitrogen runoff. The water quality was not safe for drinking due to high nitrogen levels. The average loss of fertilizer nitrogen and phosphorus was around 1% of what was applied. Oranges farms contributed the most to nitrogen and phosphorus runoff.
