Soil water stress drastically impacts photosynthesis and water use efficiency in plants.
The study looked at how different levels of soil water affect the growth of Cornus officinalis plants. They found that when the soil was drier, the plants had lower photosynthesis rates and used water less efficiently. The plants also had to work harder to take in carbon dioxide and lost more water through transpiration. Overall, the plants were less efficient at using sunlight to grow when they didn't have enough water in the soil.
