New high-yielding early-indica hybrid rice boosts food production and quality.
Scientists irradiated Minghui 63 rice seeds to create a mutant called Zaohui 90 with similar traits. They crossed Zaohui 90 with Nong A CMS line to produce Nongyou 90, a high-yielding early-indica hybrid rice. Nongyou 90 outperformed other varieties in regional trials, showing a significant yield increase of 9.8% and 8.0% compared to Veiyou 64 and Veiyou 77, respectively. It also exhibited better disease resistance and rice quality, leading to its registration in 2002 in Fujian and Jiangxi Provinces.
