Reducing nitrogen application rates boosts maize growth and soil health.
A study looked at how different amounts of nitrogen fertilizer affected soil and plant health in a wheat and maize rotation system. They found that reducing nitrogen levels by 25% and 40% didn't hurt maize growth, but actually made the plants use nitrogen more efficiently. The amount of nitrogen in the soil didn't change much with lower nitrogen levels, but the type of nitrogen did. The levels of certain nutrients in the soil increased when less nitrogen was used. This suggests that in areas where too much nitrogen is used, reducing the amount could be better for the soil and plants.
