A study in Inner Mongolia grasslands found that species richness and aboveground biomass increased with lower slope positions. The exclosure area had lower species richness but higher biomass due to shrub growth. Overgrazing and overprotection can both lead to grassland degradation, but in different ways. Long-term grazing prohibition may not be the best approach for restoring grasslands; moderate grazing could be more sustainable.
