Cascade reservoirs in Yangtze River drastically reduce sediment flow to Three Gorges.
Construction of reservoirs in the upper Yangtze River significantly reduces sediment flow to the Three Gorges reservoir. The study found that 12000 reservoirs in the upper Yangtze trapped 180 million tons of sediment annually from 1991-2005. This reduced sediment inflow to the Three Gorges reservoir by 110 million tons per year during the same period. With more reservoirs planned, sediment discharge to the Three Gorges reservoir is expected to decrease further to only 90 million tons per year.
