New interpretation reveals ancient meaning of "貌哨 (Maoshao)" in Dunhuang literature.
The word "貌哨 (Maoshao)" in Dunhuang literature was analyzed to understand its meaning. By studying ancient Chinese texts and language, the word was found to originally mean "irregular features" in the Sui and Tang Dynasty. Over time, it came to represent an incorrect attitude that was not pleasing to the eye, particularly in the context of a person whose family was indifferent to them. This new interpretation differs from previous beliefs that it meant an ugly appearance.
